Today we went to a rather large local flea-market to look for something quite different. I noticed a guy whith a trailer full of boxes of LP records. One of these boxes had classical records. Many of them where collections in the "Best of -" and "Most beloved -" genre, but there was also a box-set of all the Beethoven symphonies played by the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig lead by Franz Konwitschny. They were on Fontana K 71 BA 600 and the box looked very fine. A closer look - all 6 records in mint condition, maybe had one of them been played once, the rest was never played before. The price? - 60 Kr something like 11$ - bought!
This afternoon and evening Symphony no 1 and 2 have been on the platter. Marvelous - very good recording without any surface noise and a fine performance without the over romantic soundcarpet of Karajan - much more like modern performance practice. A fine catch - maybe I should go to more flea-markets?
